At one of the first rehearsals of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, director Jack O'Brien told the assembled cast that the show they were about to embark on was all about the thrill of gambling, the adrenaline rush of taking huge chances. The director then confessed that he had never had much interest in Vegas. "I gamble with myself," said O'Brien.
"Everyone knew exactly what he was talking about," says John Lithgow during a recent interview in San Diego, where the show was in its out-of-town tryout at the Old Globe Theatre. "As an actor, you never know whether it's going to work out or not. I start my career all over again with each and every production. It's always a roll of the dice."
